Port Manatee Sees Record Container Traffic
Just 10 months into its current fiscal year, Port Manatee has already broken its record for container shipments in a full year. Between Oct. 1, 2016, and July 31, 2017, the port moved 32,907 20-foot-equivalent container units, above the port's existing full-year record of 30,431 units, and up 47 percent compared to the first 10 months of the preceding fiscal year. Port officials attribute the increase to the ongoing transition to containers by Del Monte Fresh Produce, which imports Central American pineapples and bananas, as well as World Direct Shipping’s weekly service bringing refrigerated produce from Mexico since November 2014.
