Local officials, builders and leaders on Thursday celebrated the groundbreaking of the new Mid-County Tax Collector Office, set to be built at 6100 Sawyer Loop Road, Sarasota. A 10,770-square-foot building will be built on nearly 6 acres. The facility will provide a full range of tax collector services, including issuing drivers' licenses, vehicle titles and registrations and collecting tax payments. The site will include a road course for drivers' license testing, allowing motorists to demonstrate their competence. The expanded facility was made necessary by state legislation approved in 2011 that required tax collectors to take over all drivers' license transactions. The total construction cost is almost $3.9 million; the total project cost is almost $6.7 million.
