Another feather in Ringling College’s cap: Graphic design alum Tyler Lang has created Coastal Birds for the U.S. Postal Service’s first-ever “forever” postcard stamp series. His cheerful stylized images of the red knot, king eider, frigatebird and, in a nod to his time in Sarasota, the roseate spoonbill, are imprinted on a whopping 6 million postcards. Lang and his wife, Elsa, graduated from Ringling in 2007 and operate a graphic design studio in Portland, Ore. They frequently return here to visit their families. Lang was approached by the postal service after illustrating an article on birds for Audubon magazine. “I’ve always been fascinated by animals, my favorite subject to talk about and to draw,” he says. “This was a dream project. It was something you don’t say no to.”
