Susan BurnsGov. Rick Scott may talk about creating a better business environment with lower taxes and fewer regulations, but arts and culture (including liberal arts institutions that offer anthropology degrees) and a beautiful environment remain the region’s biggest assets in attracting CEOs. Two of the companies in this issue—Cumberland Advisors, a boutique investment firm, and Site Concepts International, a landscape design firm for international luxury resorts —both top performers in their industries, say our mix of culture and lifestyle lured them here. Their presence adds to our enviable reputation as a region of talent and wealth, and both will draw more like-minded people here. For example, Cumberland Advisors is bringing a conference of 30 VIP economists and their families from around the country to The Ritz-Carlton this winter. I have a hunch quite a few will be back—first for vacations, and then as seasonal or permanent residents.
