Remember when we wrote about a Golden Gate Point condo that was listed for $5.75 million in April? The one on the first floor of the five-story One88 building? Its previous owner, Ascend Wireless Networks founder and CEO Don Patterson, ended up fetching $5.25 million for it when it was sold two months later. And in the meantime, he bought this modern home at 3631 San Remo Terrace in Sam Remo Estates for $7 million, the highest-priced sale ever recorded in that neighborhood.

During the pandemic, like most of us, Patterson found himself at home much more. He told us he needed a bigger place than his 3,024-square-foot condo, and he also wanted to live right on the water.

With his new home, that's just what he got. The San Remo home is roughly 1,000 square feet bigger than the condo at One88, and it's right on the bay. The added space means he doesn’t have to pay for storing his toys—which include boats, jet skis, paddleboards and four cars, including a Ferrari, an Aston Martin and two motorcycles—like he used to.

Sellers Christopher and Rosanna Reyna Quinn paid $1.6 million for the home in 2015, but it didn't look like this back then.

The Quinns hired award-winning architect Stephen Chung to build this brand-new home. Completed in 2021, the four-bedroom, three-and-a-half-bath now has waterfront views from every room, along with a loft and a second-story balcony.

You may have seen the architect's work before. Chung, who is based in Boston with a satellite office in Sarasota, designed the ultra-chic Sarasota Modern hotel in the Rosemary District, which stands as a tribute to the Sarasota School of Architecture.

As for Patterson, spending more time locally lets him focus on more than enjoying his new, expansive space on the water. He's also chairman of the board of Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Sun Coast, sponsors the organization in Sarasota and Manatee counties, and mentors a child in the area. He ran for Sarasota City Commission District 2 in 2020, too.
