The federal government released new report cards for the nation’s hospitals this week, with Sarasota Memorial Hospital (SMH) receiving the top five-star quality rating for overall performance and Doctors Hospital, Lakewood Ranch Medical Center and Englewood Community Hospital receiving four stars. SMH is the only hospital in Florida—and one of just 45 in the nation—to earn the five-star rating, which comes from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS).  Of 4,586 U.S. hospitals evaluated, less than 9 percent earned the five-star rating. As in previous years, most hospitals received two, three or four stars. CMS’ star ratings are based on performance across seven quality areas: mortality, safety, readmissions, patient experience, effectiveness of care, timeliness of care and efficient use of medical imaging. The first four areas have the greatest weight.

Here's how other hospitals in the area ranked:

Five stars: Sarasota Memorial Hospital

Four stars: Doctors Hospital, Lakewood Ranch Medical Center, Englewood Community Hospital

Three stars: DeSoto Memorial

Two stars: Venice Regional Medical Center, Fawcett Memorial Hospital

One star: Blake Medical Center, Manatee Memorial  Hospital, Bayfront Health Punta Gorda and Bayfront Health Port Charlotte
