Sushi from SuShark in Gulf Gate.

Gulf Gate’s latest sushi addition, SuShark, opened on Gateway Avenue in mid-2025, sandwiched between a boxing gym and an alterations shop. If it’s anything like its sister location in Tampa, this sushi spot and its extensive menu with offerings like poke bowls, sushi rolls, sashimi and hibachi-style entrées, will be a hit.

SuShark’s building is teeny, with 10 natural-toned wooden tables and a five-seat bar in the back of the restaurant. But what it lacks in size, it makes up for in punchy flavors that fuse Japanese techniques with unexpected ingredient combinations.

“Stalker Bit Temaki” ($16.95), for example, showcases diced tempura shrimp, rice, cream cheese, avocado, spicy mayo and, surprisingly, Parmesan cheese in a soy paper cone. It presents as a traditional hand roll, but explodes with flavors that harmonize.

The crispy rice appetizer ($13), meanwhile, is made with sushi-grade proteins like tuna, salmon or krab tossed with a generous dose of truffle oil served atop perfectly rectangular rice patties fried to a teeth-shattering crisp. It’s rich in umami and a textural dream come true.

There’s plenty on the menu for traditionalists, too, who will find a spicy tuna roll ($16.45), seaweed salad ($10) and gyoza dumplings ($10.95) alongside the creative, tasty mishmash of ingredients just crazy enough to work.
