The pies have it!
Wellen Park is hosting its second annual pie-baking contest, the Great Wellen Bake-Off, on Saturday, June 28. (The title is a play on the popular Netflix baking series The Great British Baking Show.)
A panel of judges will evaluate participants in three age groups: children under 13, teens ages 13-18, and adults 18 years and older. Registration is still open, so if you'd like to compete, you can join the fun—just be sure to register first. The cost is $10 for adult registrants and free for teens and children; the proceeds from adult registrations will be donated to the South County Food Pantry.
Attendees will not be invited to sample the pies submitted to the contest—but lucky for pie enthusiasts, there will be pies available from professional vendors so you can feel like you're part of the action.
Winners of this year's Great Wellen Bake-Off will take home a $500 Visa gift card and an etched wooden spoon for first place and a $250 Visa gift card and an etched wooden spoon for second place. A prize will be awarded for each age category.
Thirty-six amateur bakers participated in last year's event, with a pecan pie winning best overall.
The Great Wellen Bake-Off will take place Saturday, June 28, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 19745 Wellen Blvd., Venice. For more information about registration and rules, click here.
