Transition Sarasota has been awarded an $8,500 grant from the Community Foundation of Sarasota to support its Suncoast Gleaning Project, which utilizes volunteers to harvest (glean) excess produce at local farms that would normally go to landfills or would go unused. The fresh produce is gleaned, transported and donated to All Faiths Food Bank and Food Bank of Manatee, and is then distributed to local community members in need. Funding is provided in part by the George J. & Alice Pugh Donor Advised Fund of the Community Foundation of Sarasota County; it will allow Transition Sarasota to increase its gleaning capacity and add new farms.
