Florida on the Cusp of 70,000 COVID-19 Cases

Florida reported 69,069 total COVID-19 cases as of Thursday afternoon, an increase of 8,886 cases over the previous week. In Sarasota County, there are 716 total cases; in Manatee County, there are 1,253 total cases. A total of 2,848 Floridians have died from the disease.

Florida Reports More Than 60,000 COVID-19 Cases

Florida currently has the eighth-highest number of COVID-19 cases in the country, data shows, with 60,183 total infections—an increase of 6,898 over the past week. In Sarasota County, there are currently 652 cases; in Manatee County, there are 1,134 cases. A total of 2,607 Floridians have died from the disease, which has cost the lives of more than 107,000 people nationally.

As U.S. Breaks 100,000 Death Mark, Florida Reports 53,285 Total COVID-19 Infections

The state of Florida reported a total of 53,285 positive COVID-19 cases, an increase of at least 4,610 cases over the previous week. In Manatee County, there are a total of 1,007 cases; in Sarasota County, a total of 611 cases. Florida currently has the ninth highest amount of cases in the country. These numbers come as the U.S. reported more than 100,000 deaths from the infection this week and unemployment claims rose to more than 40 million.

State Reports 48,675 Total COVID-19 Cases; 2,144 Total Deaths

The state of Florida reported a total of 48,675 positive COVID-19 cases, an increase of at least 5,465 cases over the previous week. Between Wednesday and Thursday alone, the state added 1,200 cases. In Manatee County, there are a total of 933 cases; in Sarasota County, a total of 550 cases.

In the U.S., more than 1,574,400 people in the United States have been infected with COVID-19 and at least 94,200 have died, based on data from a New York Times database. Florida currently has the ninth highest amount of cases in the country. Earlier this week, the state also made news for the firing of Rebekah Jones, the state's top data scientist tracking pandemic numbers, who said she was let go for "refusing to manipulate data." Gov. Ron DeSantis defended Jones' firing at a press conference in Orlando on Wednesday, saying other scientists didn't believe she was putting "valid data" on the portal.

Florida Reports 43,210 Total COVID-19 Cases, 4,382-Case Increase Over Last Week

The Florida Department of Health's Thursday update showed a total of 43,210 cases in the state of Florida, including 1,875 deaths. In Sarasota County, there are 487 total cases; in Manatee County, 813 total cases. By comparison, last Thursday, May 7, there were 38,828 total cases in the state, with 412 total cases in Sarasota County and 737 total cases in Manatee County.

Florida currently has the ninth-highest number of cases in the country.
