What to Do in Sarasota: June 17-23

The Skyway 2021 exhibit opens at The Ringling, more art on view in Sarasota and Venice, Suncoast Summer Fest gears up and more.

Skyway 2021: A Contemporary Collaboration

June 20-Sept. 26

This exhibit opening at the John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art is actually part of a much bigger package: The Museum of Fine Arts St. Petersburg, the Tampa Museum of Art and the USF Contemporary Art Museum in Tampa are all showcasing the work of regional artists for the new few months, too. On view at the Ringling are pieces by Carrie Boucher, Ya Levy La’ford, Kalup Linzy, Noelle Mason, OK! Transmit, Eric Ondina, Heather Rosenbach and Jake Troyli; but you can see much more by local names if you head north over the Sunshine Skyway bridge. Check it out at ringling.org.

Art Center Sarasota

There’s more visual art to explore if you haven’t yet stopped by Art Center Sarasota’s four current exhibitions. Take in Nancy Dillen’s Visual Poems, featuring paintings and graphite drawings of landscapes and creatures; work in paint, ink and more by Yamel Molerio in Black, White and Everything in Between; steel, bronze and copper sculptures by Dominice Gilbert in Duality; and a members’ exhibition featuring work in all media with Process. Downtown Venice Craft Festival

June 19 and 20

After a long year of holding fewer community events in Venice due to Covid, the 28th annual edition of this festival is back, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day, at 401 W. Venice Ave. Admission is free, and it’s outdoors, but organizers are still requesting masks and social distancing for now. Learn more at artfestival.com.

Suncoast Summer Fest

June 24-July 4

This festival to benefit Suncoast Charities for Children officially kicks off next week, but you might want to get your tickets for the “Waves & Wheels” party June 24 now. It’s set for 6 to 10 p.m. at Robarts Arena, Sarasota Fairgrounds, and features music from dance band Lucky Penny along with lots of food and car, motorcycle and race boat displays.
