Artist Keith Crowley Captures the 'Surprise of Light'

Painter Keith Crowley, also senior preparator at The Ringling, captured the simplicity of Florida’s mobile home parks when he painted this Sarasota trailer in Tri-Par Estates on a sunny morning. He was struck by the contrast of a massive Norfolk pine next to a small, quaint building and the “forlorn” plastic chair half in and out of the shade. The light created patterns that were like rhythms—what Crowley calls “a visual form of percussion.” The scene became a portrait of an ordinary moment, he says, an example of the spontaneous, meaningful moments that surround us.
“The memories I find most significant as a painter are ones where I’m caught by surprise by light traveling in a profound way in an otherwise unremarkable space. The west coast of Florida and its specific characteristics of light have had a large impact on my work.”
Here's a look at some more of Crowley's pieces.
