New College Announces This Year's 'New Topics' Lineup

This season will explore timely issues such as coastal resilience and the entertainment marketing revolution.

Chris Reed will speak about coastal resilience on Wednesday, Oct. 26 at New College of Florida. 

New College of Florida’s New Topics lecture series kicks off its 2022-23 season this month, featuring talks on timely issues such as coastal resilience and the entertainment marketing revolution. 

The series opens on Wednesday, Oct. 26, with a lecture by Harvard professor of architecture and landscape design leader Chris Reed. The talk, “Climate Crisis Now! Learning and Landscape in a Changing Environment,” is especially pertinent as Florida rebuilds following Hurricane Ian, which devastated parts of south and east Sarasota County. Reed will share how institutions located in coastal areas, like New College, can develop campuses that pave the way for sustainable and resilient communities.

Holocaust survivor Louise Lawrence-Israëls and Rohingya activist and survivor Wai Wai Nu will speak with Naomi Kikoler on Jan. 25.

New Topics continues Wednesday, Jan. 25, with “Fleeing Atrocities: Witness Perspectives,” a discussion featuring Holocaust survivor Louise Lawrence-Israëls and Rohingya activist and survivor Wai Wai Nu. The speakers will explore how we can learn from survivors’ experiences during the Rohingya genocide in Myanmar, formerly Burma, and the Holocaust. Naomi Kikoler, director of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum’s Simon-Skjodt Center for the Prevention of Genocide, will moderate the discussion.

Hollywood marketing leaders Smitty Smith and Jackson George will speak about changes in entertainment marketing on Feb. 16. 

The next lecture, on Thursday, Feb. 16, explores Hollywood’s current marketing revolution. New College alumni Smitty Smith, CEO of the creative agency InSync Plus, and Jackson George, a Walt Disney advertising executive, will examine, “The Bigger Picture: Entertainment Marketing in a Changing World.” They will also share film industry stories and discuss how modern technology is transforming today’s entertainment marketing.

Environmental author Cynthia Barnett will share her findings on seashells on March 21. 

The New Topics series concludes on Tuesday, March 21, with a talk about seashells by environmental author Cynthia Barnett. Barnett will trace the history of the seashell from prehistoric times to the present day, highlighting its role in human life. Additionally, she will discuss how the humble seashell can potentially help us tackle climate change and preserve our planet.

The series runs from October to March. Tickets are $10 for the public; staff, students and faculty admission is free. Each lecture will be held at the Sainer Pavilion at New College and begin at 5:30 p.m.
