Celebrate Sarasota Fireworks, Parade and More

July 3 and 4

Fireworks are back this Independence Day, along with a parade and A Celebration in the Park (J.D. Hamel Park, that is). That celebration starts Saturday, from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. in the park, and continues Sunday from 3 to 7 p.m. The parade begins at 8 p.m. Sunday at Mound Street and Orange Avenue, ending at Bayfront Drive, and it’s followed by the national anthem sung by American Idol local star Alan Sherman and then, of course the bayfront fireworks display at dusk. In case you’re not near downtown Sarasota on Independence Day, be aware you can also watch the skies light up July 3 at Nathan Benderson Park, where live music and a Kids Zone are part of the mix; and on the Fourth during Siesta Key’s event on Siesta Beach, in Venice from the South Jetty, and over the Manatee River Green Bridge in Manatee County. Plus Palmetto’s annual free Fourth of July festival at Sutton Park returns, with Wynonna & The Big Noise as musical headliner. Choral Artists of Sarasota: American Fanfare

July 4

Meanwhile, tune in to patriotic anthems and inspirational choral works as Choral Artists, joined by the Lakewood Ranch Wind Ensemble, perform Sousa marches and more to mark our country’s independence. The in-person concert starts at 2:30 p.m. at the Sarasota Opera House; if you miss it, there will be online replay July 14-Aug. 17 at choralartistssarasota.org, where tickets are also on sale.

First Friday Artwalk

Street and sidewalk murals, art galleries open for browsing and more of Sarasota’s arts scene are highlighted during this monthly stroll along down town’s Palm Avenue, from 4 to 9 p.m. “An American Salute” is this month’s theme. Look into it at palmave.com.

Sarasota Farmers Market

July 3

The Woman Who Broke Boundaries: Photographer Lee Miller

July 3-Jan. 2

In conjunction with Women’s History Month, the Dali Museum in St. Pete presents this exhibit focusing on the groundbreaking works of Lee Miller, including her portraits of important writers and artists who were her friends, especially in the Surrealist movement. Miller also served as a war correspondent in World War II—a rarity for a woman at the time. Find out more at thedali.org.
