North Port Aquatic Center

Through Aug. 30

It’s hot. Splash into the cool with your family at this water park at 6205 W. Price Blvd., which is offering extended hours until the end of the month. All patrons must sign a waiver acknowledging the Covid-19 protocols enforced at the park; you can download that from the city website at cityofnorthport.com and bring it with you or email it beforehand to [email protected]. Or call (941) 429-7275 for info.

Voices and Votes: Democracy in America

Opening Aug. 15

In this important election year, a little perspective on the topics of suffrage, civil rights and casting ballots is a good thing. Take a peek at this traveling exhibit from the Smithsonian National Museum of American History, on view Aug. 15 to Oct. 20 at the Betty J. Johnson North Sarasota Library.  https://floridahumanities.org/voices-and-votes-democracy-in-america-sarasota/

A Killer Party—A Murder Mystery Musical

Streaming this month

It's not too late to sign up for this fun nine-episode series conceived by and starring some top Broadway veterans (the cast includes Jeremy Jordan and Laura Osnes, who played Bonnie and Clyde at Asolo Rep a few seasons back). The first three episodes became available last week but remain so, while episodes 4-6 become available Aug. 12 and 7-9 Aug. 19. The cost is $12.99; sign up here. A portion of the proceeds benefits the Van Wezel.

Sarasota Jungle Gardens

Open Thursdays-Sundays

When’s the last time you paid a visit to this long-running attraction featuring pink flamingoes, parrots, lemurs, reptiles and more wildlife, along with plenty of colorful plantings? Closed for a while due to the pandemic, Jungle Gardens has been open again for some weeks with reduced hours; it still offers family-oriented animal shows as well as strolls through the property. For tickets and info, visit sarasotajunglegardens.com.

Sarasota Classic Car Museum

Open daily

While you’re in the neighborhood of the gardens, maybe the car lovers in your family would like to see what this antique car museum, just across the highway, is all about. With more than 75 cars on display, you’ll find everything from John Ringling’s 1922 Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost and wife Mable’s 1923 Pierce Arrow to more recent works of automobile art like Porsches, Ferraris and Lamborghinis. Check it out at sarasotacarmuseum.org.
