Let the treasure hunt begin. The Venice Sharks Tooth Festival--this weekend, April 8-10--celebrates Venice's status as the Sharks Tooth Capital of the World, a title earned through a geographic quirk that created a preponderance of fossilized dentum on area beaches. Venice draws visitors from near and far who comb the sands in search of pointy keepsakes that once occupied the mouths of prehistoric sharks.

The three-day festival captures the town’s enthusiasm for shark’s teeth with a slew of family fun, including plenty of tooth-based arts, crafts and jewelry, as well as fair food and live music. Best of all, it benefits the Sarasota County chapter of the Special Olympics—a great excuse to show off those pearly whites. Visit sharkstoothfest.com to find out more.
