In 2006, Sarasota was named the “meanest city in the nation” toward people
experiencing homelessness. Since then, the community has worked intentionally to build something different.

Today, outreach teams, service providers, healthcare partners, and local organizations work together across Sarasota and Manatee counties to help people avoid falling deeper into crisis. But once someone moves through those systems, one need remains:

a permanent place to live.

Not a shelter bed.
Not a temporary placement.
A home.

This is where Second Heart Homes is the solution.
Second Heart Homes provides permanent supportive housing for adults living with mental illnesses who have experienced homelessness. Residents live together in homes located throughout residential neighborhoods and receive individualized support from highly trained social workers who visit regularly throughout the week.

Today, Second Heart Homes operates 11 homes serving nearly 70 individuals who once lived on the streets. This April, 2 new duplex homes will open for 12 women, giving them access and the opportunity to start changing their lives.

Second Heart Homes owns its homes outright and operates entirely through private philanthropy, without government funding. Each gift helps create lasting housing and lasting stability that improves this community for decades to come.

These are not temporary placements.

They are permanent homes.
