In his latest body of work, painter Russ Noto transforms an improbable historical encounter into a lush, cinematic world where myth, memory, and the pastoral collide.

Some stories arrive fully formed. Others begin as whispers—small, curious details that linger in the imagination until they bloom into something larger. In OF FORM AND FUTILITY: Visual Dialogues Pertaining to the Pastoral of Andre the Giant and Samuel Beckett, artist Russ Noto takes one such whisper and spins it into a visual mythology as surprising as it is beautiful.

Art Center Sarasota, in the midst of its landmark centennial year, welcomes Noto for an exhibition that feels both cinematic and intimate. At its core lies a single historical footnote: after emigrating to France, playwright Samuel Beckett lived in the village of Molien, where he befriended a neighbor whose son would become famous as André the Giant. On quiet mornings, Beckett would drive young André to school. Beyond this, almost nothing is recorded.

For Noto, that mysterious absence is the spark.

He leans into the vast imaginative space between the cerebral world of Beckett and the monumental physical presence of André. The result is a suite of paintings that exist somewhere between history and dream—lush pastoral scenes where forms hum with quiet electricity, and the boundaries between high and low culture dissolve in the afternoon light.

A Pastoral with Quiet Power

The landscapes in OF FORM AND FUTILITY unfold with a softness that belies their tension. Noto’s meadows are not simply fields—they are stages: expansive, mysterious, charged with the subtle gravity of a story just beginning to reveal itself.

Hints of narrative appear like flashes of memory:
A giant’s shadow grounds the composition.
A shape held in mid-gesture.
A stray phrase drifting like a thought across the canvas.

The “Giant” in this world is both literal and symbolic. He is André, with all his physical presence and cultural complexity. But he is also an emblem of the in-between—that space where the mythic and the mundane converge.

This duality animates the show’s title. FORM speaks to André’s monumental scale and to the tightly constructed architectures of Beckett’s writing. FUTILITY draws from wrestling’s performative spectacle and Beckett’s lifelong fascination with cyclical, sometimes absurd human behavior.

Noto’s exhibition becomes a place where the sublime and the theatrical coexist—a quiet mythology told through relationships: objects to objects, forms to forms, figures to landscapes.

An Artist with a Visionary Eye

Noto brings a thoughtful, rigorously honed sensibility to this unusual pairing. After receiving his MFA from the Savannah College of Art and Design in 2012, he quickly gained national and international momentum, exhibiting at SCOPE: New York and SCOPE: Miami. His work now resides in the SCAD Permanent Collection and in private collections across China, Slovakia, Canada, France, and the United States.

Features in American Art Collector and New American Paintings, along with his 2018 catalog Flowers and Concrete, highlight the evolving sophistication of his practice. Currently based in the Philadelphia area, he continues to merge tradition with conceptual inquiry—an approach that animates every inch of OF FORM AND FUTILITY.
