The Key Chorale season concludes on May 10 with Beethoven’s “Ode to Joy.” Like a thunderbolt, the finale to Beethoven’s immortal Ninth Symphony was unleashed into the world. 200 years later it has become an anthem for unity and joy. Beethoven’s uplifting Choral Fantasy, featuring soloist Glenn Priest, and his rarely performed Calm Sea and Prosperous Voyage round out a season finale showcasing music by classical music’s most well-known rebel.
The Ninth Symphony is considered one of the most important artworks in Western culture. Musicologists consider it the greatest symphony ever written, a revolutionary work by a revolutionary composer with one of the most satisfying finales in classical music. The symphony premiered in 1824 and pushed the boundaries of the form by adding a full chorus and soloists for the very first time in history.
“It was an easy choice to select the finale to Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony to put the exclamation point on our 40th anniversary season,” said Maestro Caulkins. “It’s powerful music, and universal themes of brotherhood and unity, are just as relevant today as they were 200 years ago. Key Chorale has matured into an absolutely stunning ensemble these past few seasons, and these 3 works of Beethoven will showcase that in many ways.”
