Kim McAninch’s “Head and Heart” series is a symphony of mediums: oil, oil pastel, ink and pencil on paper. Each piece contains that inexplicable magic that immediately catches your eye and keeps you looking for what feels like a lifetime. Though her work is abstract by nature, she never forgets to add a hint of a horizon line, which reminds the viewer of landscapes that only arise in their imagination.

Her history as a wallpaper, fabric and interior designer has paved the foundation for her layered, textural and painterly style. From far away, the paintings have dramatic colorfields. Approaching each piece, the subtle and shifting texture made from  layers of paint and zig-zigs of pastel take the center stage. Both the applied materials and the implied subject matter play here.

McAninch participated in the Outer Cape Arts in Residency Consortium in July 2018, which completely changed her life and allowed her to step into the fullest expression of herself as an artist. It was during this two-week residency, a time spent alone in a shack by the water and immersed in nature, that she discovered the “Head and Heart” series. She says, “There is a deep connection with the environment when immersed in such a way as an artist residency.” By having the space to fully commit to her work, she came up with something extraordinary.

McAninch, a member of the National Association of Women Artists and American Women Artists, recently moved to Longboat Key, FL where she has been able to expand and dive deeper into this series.

Furthermore, she strives to express the pure joy of color. She uses a range of colors from deep and intense midnight blues to light and airy hues of yellow and verdant green that are reminiscent of the sea breeze on the perfect day at Lido Beach.

530 Burns Gallery began showing McAninch's work in October of 2019. Gallery owner Nikki Sedacca says, “In a short period of time, we have experienced such overwhelmingly positive feedback on Kim’s work, we knew we had to make space for a solo exhibition of her paintings this season.” Accepting the offering, McAninch has been working around the clock to take her “Head and Heart” series to the next level. From humble beginnings with 10 x 10 inch squares on paper in the Dunes Shack to large works up to 52 x 52 inches, the exhibition will debut her next evolution.

McAninch says, “My work is so very important to me and progressing in the one thing that sets me apart is very important to me.” Living in pursuit to express a creative vision is never easy, but from it comes works that will be loved and cherished for a lifetime. This body of work is doing just that.
