So, you think you can paint? Test your skills in a three-day intensive workshop with a modern master right here in Sarasota. Visiting artist instructors travel to Art Center Sarasota each year to inspire, challenge and create new works with area artists and residents. Meet five of these artists, who are offering workshops for students of all skill levels. Take a few days to fuel that creative buzz that hits every New Year and discover your true talents. 

Don Andrews - Color & Design - WATERCOLOR WORKSHOP - JANUARY 2020
Artist, author, instructor - visiting from Texas

Don Andrews is an internationally acclaimed watercolor artist and a Ringling College of Art and Design graduate. He has conducted workshops internationally for more than 30 years. The “Color & Design” workshop explores the fundamentals of light, contrast and composition using watercolor. Express yourself with color with your choice of vibrant or soothing color palettes.\

Jennifer Bowman - Get Excited About Acrylics  - FEBRUARY 2020
Artist, sailor, instructor - visiting from Washington

Jennifer Bowman came to appreciate the quality of reflected light on water during her years as a sailor. She is known for her ability to illustrate how light plays off of the subject. Bowman teaches in the U.S. and Mexico.

The “Get Excited about Acrylics” workshop combines layering over re-textured canvases. Using techniques such as “wet into wet,” dry brush and palette knife, your work will incorporate the concepts of rhythm, shape and color. 

Janet Rogers - Flowers and Landscapes & Children's Portraits - 2 WATERCOLOR WORKSHOPS – FEBRUARY 2020
Artist, author, instructor - visiting from Ormond Beach, Florida

Janet Rogers, originally from Philadelphia, is well-known for her expressive portraits of women, children and florals. The workshops focus on loose and expressive transparent watercolor techniques. In the “Flowers” workshop you will work from still life compositions of flowers. The “Portrait” workshop focuses on capturing the spirit and spontaneity of painting children.  For the ultimate experience, watercolor enthusiasts are encouraged to take both of Janet’s workshops. 

Liz Walker - Paper Marbling & Collage - MIXED MEDIA WORKSHOP – MARCH 2020
Artist, juror, instructor - visiting from Oregon

Liz Walker was born in Pennsylvania and raised in San Antonio, Texas—a large metropolitan city infused with the culture, language and architecture of Mexico. This experience has influenced how she chooses the colors and subject matter in her paintings. The “Paper Marbling and Collage” workshop combines mixed media painting and collage with marbled papers. You will learn the ancient Japanese marbling technique of “suminagashi,” then enhance your papers with abstract painting.

Jane Slivka - Freedom of Acrylics - MARCH 2020
Artist, gallery owner, instructor - visiting from Mount Dora, Florida

Jane Slivka graduated from Ohio University with a degree in Art Education and Watercolor. While studying abroad for a semester in Florence, Italy, she gleaned much inspiration from the richness of the historical art and gorgeous landscapes. The “Freedom of Acrylics” workshop combines dynamic mark-making with Slivka’s color theory and fast approach. You will have daily demonstrations, discussions and individual critiques in a very lively atmosphere.
