Now in its 45th Season, Florida Studio Theatre (FST) has grown from an alternative touring group into a nationally recognized regional theatre. Hip and historical, entertaining and challenging, FST is truly Sarasota’s public theatre. Located in the heart of downtown Sarasota, FST welcomes individuals of all ages, interests, and backgrounds to partake in innovative, high-caliber theatre at accessible prices. FST reaches over 215,000 attendees annually with its ever-expanding campus, which has grown to include five theatres. From Broadway hits, musical revues, and edgy new plays to improv comedy, Children’s Theatre, and educational programming, FST is Sarasota’s Contemporary Theatre.
1973: FST is founded by Jon Spelman as an alternative touring company, performing in migrant camps and prisons. In 1980, Richard Hopkins is named Artistic Director, establishing FST as a residential theatre.
1983: FST purchases and renovates the 1914 historic Sarasota Woman’s Club building. Known today as the Keating Theatre, the original home to FST Mainstage and Children’s Theatre productions is on the National Register of Historic Places.
1995: FST opens The Goldstein Cabaret and produces its first Cabaret Season. Featuring original musical revues inspired by musical artists of all genres, from Gershwin to Billy Joel, FST’s Cabaret has become a Sarasota staple.
2012: FST opens the newly renovated Gompertz Theatre and the new Court Cabaret and Bowne’s Lab, allowing for continued growth and expansion. Today FST produces 19 productions, 52 weeks a year.
