The most expensive house in town? It called Villa del Sogno (sogno means dream in Italian) and it’s in that ultra exclusive enclave called Regent Court behind the gates of the Longboat Key Club. In the October issue of Sarasota Magazine, where we name the 20 most expensive homes in town, four of them are the Villa’s neighbors.

The price tag? $20 million.

A lot of money, to be sure, but for what you get it seems reasonable, maybe even a little underpriced. First of all, it’s right on the beach, with a good-size lot of 1.35 acres. And at almost 12,000 square feet, the home is enormous.

The first level is a garage and there must be room for 30 cars, although the official count is only four. There are several kitchens, including a guest kitchen and a catering kitchen. The main level is clad in marble, with crystal chandeliers and French-style embellishments. I kept thinking of the Bellagio Hotel in Vegas.

The interior is almost overwhelming, with some rooms more successful than others. My favorite by far is the master bedroom—very French in a Riviera sort of way, with all sorts of fussy frills that somehow all come together and work.

There are 4 other bedrooms and 6 full baths. You’ll also find a nicely subdued family room, a wood paneled office, several grand sweeping staircases, and a bar. Outside on the main terrace is an infinity pool over looking the gulf. Your neighbors will include Congressman Vern Buchanan plus some billionaires from the Midwest and Europe.

And if you use conventional financing, with 20 percent down, your monthly payment will be $74,836.

Villa del Sogno is listed by Louis Wery of Premier Sotheby’s. He can be reached at (941) 232-3001.
