The Special Olympics' Law Enforcement Torch Run made a stop Wednesday morning in front of Rise & Nye’s coffee and ice cream shop in downtown Sarasota that employs 35 people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

The law enforcement officers are called “Guardians of the Flame,” and they've carried the Special Olympics torch from Chicago, beginning on May 20, all the way to Florida in honor of the 2022 USA Special Olympics Games in Orlando this year. The Flame of Hope arrived in Florida yesterday, and will make its way up both coasts before arriving in Orlando on June 5.

During a speech outside the shop, Beaver Shriver, co-owner of Rise and Nye’s, said, “The 2022 U.S.A games will be the largest games in U.S.A history, with more than 5,000 athletes participating from all across the United States and the Caribbean, 63 delegations of Special Olympics athletes.”
