The closure affects 40,000 American jobs and includes theaters in downtown Sarasota and Bradenton.

Regal Cinemas' parent company, Cineworld, announced on Monday that it would temporarily close all of its American and British movie theaters, including one in downtown Sarasota and one in Bradenton. The closure is a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, which saw movie companies pushing back film releases including including Disney's live-action Mulan, Marvel's Black Widow, D.C.'s Wonder Woman 1984, and No Time to Die, the latest James Bond film. According to The New York Times, Cineworld reported $1.6 billion in losses for the first half of 2020. There is no date for when the theaters might reopen.
