A map of downtown Sarasota showing possible paid parking locations

The Sarasota City Commission is scheduled to discuss a possible paid parking strategy during its next meeting, which begins at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 6. City staffers, working with the Parking Advisory Committee, have proposed adding 458 metered parking spaces in the "downtown/judicial area," approximately 11 percent of all public parking spaces there. The metered spaces would be located on Main Street, between Gulfstream Avenue and School Avenue; on South Palm Avenue, from Cocoanut Avenue to Ringling Boulevard; and on Ringling Boulevard, between School Avenue and Washington Boulevard. Paid hours would run 10 a.m.-8 p.m. Monday-Saturday; the cost would be $1 per hour. According to a staff memo on the proposal, the plan would "enhance parking conditions by reducing congestion and making the off street garages more amendable for many parkers."
