Sarasota Magazine Wins 7 Awards in SPJ Sunshine State Awards Competition

Sarasota Magazine won seven awards in the 22nd annual Sunshine State Award competition of the South Florida Society of Professional Journalists in Miami on July 9, 2016. Competing against magazines throughout Florida, Sarasota won for both editorial and artistic excellence. In all, 17 awards were given in the magazine division, with Sarasota bringing home almost half of those.
“Our staff and contributors are so dedicated to telling the story of this great city through enterprising journalism and innovative design, and it means so much to be recognized by our peers in this prestigious statewide competition,” says editorial director Pam Daniel. “We are all energized and excited by these awards, and we’re especially proud of our longtime contributors, Tony D’Souza and Kim Hackett, who have done so much great work for us over the years.”

Public Service Reporting: First Place for Tony D’Souza’s “Going Nowhere,” about Sarasota’s homelessness crisis
Investigative Reporting: First place for “Going Nowhere”; Second place for Tony D’Souza’s “The Sky is Falling,” about Dolphin Tower
Profile: Third place for Kim Hackett’s “The Warrior,” about Barbara Zdravecky, CEO of Planned Parenthood
Commentary & Criticism: Third place for Pam Daniel’s “Tallahassee vs. the People” column
Cover Design: Third place for covers by Gigi Ortwein
Inside Design: Third place for features by Gigi Ortwein, including “Hooked on Boating,” “Places in Her Heart,” “Season Preview”
