The 6th annual “Stuff the Bus” event collected more than 110,000 pounds of food for the Food Bank of Manatee. Manatee County School District buses parked in front of all Manatee County Publix locations and shoppers were encouraged to donate food.

 


 

The Allen Wirtz Nobbe and Jo Bowen Nobbe Fund at the Community Foundation of Sarasota has awarded a $30,000 grant to Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Sun Coast for the Reading Bigs program at Tuttle Elementary School. The Reading Bigs program promotes a love of literature among children at risk of failing the FCAT reading section and improves comprehension by reading aloud, discussing books and writing or drawing responses to materials.

 


 

The State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota (SCF) Veterans Scholarship Fund, established through the SCF Foundation, became fully endowed on Veterans Day, with help from the Sarasota and Venice Kiwanis Clubs, which hosted Veterans Day Breakfast events Nov. 11. SCF Foundation scholarship funds are endowed at $25,000. The SCF Foundation Board of Directors gave approval to match donated funds up to $25,000. A remaining $8,000 in matching funds is available.

 


 

Tervis celebrates the holidays from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday with the fourth annual Tinseltown at Tervis, a community event at its Osprey store, 928 S. Tamiami Trail. Five percent of sales will be donated to participating school groups. For more information call (941) 966-861.

Crow’s Nest Marina Restaurant’s Dine Out Day for United Way raised more than $2,300 for the organization. Sales proceeds from the restaurant and marina went to United Way of South Sarasota County, and more than 50 restaurant and marina staff also donated a portion of their tips and wages.

 


 

On Monday, Feb. 23, the Orioles will hold the 5th Annual OriolesREACH Birdland Golf Classic at The Founders Club to benefit the Miracle League of Manasota, an organization dedicated to providing an opportunity for every person to play baseball, regardless of ability. Registration is now open for golfers and corporate partners. The event begins with registration and lunch at 11 a.m., with a shotgun start set for 12:30 p.m. The classic will feature a silent auction and the chance to play a round with current and former Orioles players and coaches. Since its inception, the Birdland Golf Classic has raised more than $125,000 for the Miracle League.
