Beginning today through May 7, Community Youth Development is showcasing the “Pathway of STARs” near the food court at Westfield Sarasota Square Mall. Each of the 162 stars represents a current STAR student—a high school student who has completed CYD’s comprehensive, 75-hour STAR Leadership Training Program. Visitors to the “Pathway of STARs” are encouraged to create their own star and to show their support of the pathway by posting a photo online with the hashtag #BeASTAR.

 


 

Gulf Coast Community Foundation’s board of directors approved $3.98 million in grants, including more than $100,000 in community grants to area nonprofits and $3.8 million recommended by donors who have established charitable funds at the foundation. Six IberiaBank employees have volunteered over an 11-week period to teach financial literacy classes in partnership with Harvest House Transitional Centers. The coursework is derived from the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation’s MoneySmart training, teaching students about credit and banking services to encourage smart financial behaviors.

 


 

Designing Women presented a $50,000 check to the Asolo Repertory Theatre as part of the boutique’s annual grant program. Other grant recipients were the Sarasota Ballet, Sarasota Museum of Art, Salvation Army, Art Center Sarasota, Boys and Girls Clubs, Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe and All Faiths Food Bank.

 


 

The Jerome & Mildred Paddock Foundation has awarded $10,000 to Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Sun Coast for the Juvenile Justice Mentoring Initiative, which provides prevention and early intervention through specialized mentoring services for youth who are at high risk of entering the juvenile justice system.

 


With its donation of $13.75 million in resources and services, the Patterson Foundation is among more than 30 national philanthropies and corporations contributing to the Philanthropy-Joining Forces Impact Pledge. The national pledge is designed to support the 2.2 million veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars and their families.
