Dr. Kumar Mahadevan

Dr. Kumar Mahadevan, president and CEO of Mote Marine Laboratory, founded in 1955, is celebrating 25 years of leadership at the internationally known marine research facility on the south end of Longboat Key. The opening of the lab’s shark tank in October 1988 was a major highlight of Mahadevan’s career, exciting the curiosity of laypeople about the research being performed inside the lab. “It was a real turning point, a way for us to connect with the community,” he says. While tight budgets have always challenged Mote’s scientists, Mahadevan says the staff’s tenacity in taking risks has kept the lab moving forward. Even as a young scientist in India, Mahadevan had heard about the achievements of Mote staff and volunteers. “The people have always been the hallmark of Mote Marine Lab,” he says. —Patricia Abduragimova
