Fashion Statement—Michelle McKay

By staff May 1, 2008

What are you wearing?

A little Bill Blass, a little Prada, some South Sea pearls that my husband [former state Sen. John McKay] got me—I don’t know a woman who doesn’t like pearls—and a Lambertson Truex clutch.

Where do you like to shop? In Sarasota, Saks—everybody there is so helpful and they have great things. I also like L. Boutique—LeeAnne [Swor, the owner] has some really cute pieces.

What some of your favorite brands? During the week, when I’m working [as a lobbyist] in Tallahassee, I always suit up—I tend toward more tailored, clean lines like Theory, Elie Tahari and occasionally Armani.

Do you have a signature look? I wear jeans whenever I can. You can dress them up or down; I was thrilled when [dressier] jeans that you can wear out came back into style. I also love scarves. Add a scarf to a simple black skirt and a simple sweater and you’re done.

Who are your style icons?

Grace Kelly, Jackie O and Babe Paley. Their looks are classic, timeless.

What are you looking forward to for summer?

I love summer clothes, especially brightly colored dresses and strappy sandals. And I like that longer shorts have come back in, too.

How do you stay in shape?

I do the treadmill or something five days a week, and John and I try to watch what we eat.

What’s your favorite thing to do in Sarasota?

When the legislature is in session, I’m in Tallahassee during the week, but other than that, I’m here full-time. We go out on the boat and go fishing, and we take advantage of the culture, especially the Ringling Museum.
