After more than a decade of calling Sarasota home, Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee Stu Cook is selling his San Remo home. Cook, 79, the bassist for Creedence Clearwater Revival, has listed his waterfront estate at 3638 San Remo Terrace for $9.975 million.

But there's not a bad moon rising in Cook’s world. He and his wife Dana are just opting for a simpler lifestyle after spending a summer in Europe, where they fell in love with smaller spaces and a "lock-and-leave" way of life.

“We decided we didn’t need a big house anymore—certainly not the yard—or waiting for people to come fix things,” Cook explains. “So we opted for a simpler style of life. Turn the key, that’s it.”

The home spans three floors.

The San Remo home has a story fit for rock history, though. Originally designed by renowned Sarasota School architect Carl Abbott, the couple liked the home's modernist bones, even though the interior design at the time made it look like, in Cook's words, "a midwest '80s abode." Even Abbott divorced himself from having his name attached to it.

But the residence underwent a near-total reconstruction after a fire broke out in 2014, reducing the interior to just bare walls—the blaze even took out the roof. Over the next 27 months, the Cooks oversaw an extensive rebuild and brought Abbott back on to preserve the original structure’s modernist design.

The result? A home that blends classic Sarasota School design with Cook's penchant for clean lines and open spaces. While he's lived in a variety of homes—from an English stone cottage to a flat-roofed house buried under six feet of Sierra snow—his preference has always been contemporary.

“It’s a style that withstands the test of time,” Cook says. “I don’t like broken-up space.”

The 5,500-square-foot home has floor-to-ceiling windows, a Valcucine glass-front kitchen, and a rooftop deck with panoramic views stretching nearly to Venice. The latter was a non-negotiable addition, spurred on by Abbott himself. “Carl climbed a ladder to the roof, looked out and told us, ‘You have to do a rooftop deck—you’ll thank me later,’” Cook says. “And he was right. It’s incredible up there.”

Indeed, "the home is an architectural statement curated by Abbott and the Cooks," says Joel Schemmel of Sotheby's International Realty, who's representing the couple in the sale.

The rooftop space, which Abbott insisted on adding, can fit 40 to 50 people. And yes, there's an elevator.

The home has a seamless indoor-outdoor connection, with a travertine pool deck, private boat dock and lush landscaping. And while last year's hurricanes tested Sarasota’s waterfront properties with high winds and flooding, Cook’s home stood its ground.

“The landscaping, pool and dock took a beating, but the house itself? Nothing," he says. "Not even a scratch—just a couple of roof tiles. The neighbor’s boat did come through the yard, though. That needed handling.”

Cook, who has lived in Sarasota since 2013, the year he and Dana bought the home for $2.95 million, has no plans to leave the city. The couple has already relocated to a residence on Golden Gate Point, where they plan to enjoy the more low-maintenance lifestyle they want.

“Sarasota has a lot to offer,” Cook says. “It gets a little crowded in season, and we go away in the summer, but I don’t see myself living anywhere else.”

Right now, he's also enjoying retirement after officially stepping away from touring in 2020. You won’t find him playing local gigs, but he plays garage jams with a few Sarasota musicians (no, he he won’t name them).

“There’s three or four of us. We take turns playing, and I’ll sing, too," he says. "But I have no professional aspirations. I think I’ve done enough."

So, after years of living—ahem—down on the corner of one of Sarasota’s most exclusive waterfront neighborhoods, Cook is rolling on the river to his next chapter, leaving behind a home that, much like his music, is timeless.
