If you're invited to a get-together in downtown Sarasota to plump frown lines and fill jawlines, and then head upstairs to soak in a rooftop hot tub with your besties, it will probably happen at The Laser Lounge Spa. 

The four-story building at 1345 Second St., where John Carl Spa & Salon was in business for more than 20 years, will soon become the largest of the Laser Lounge Spas. It's a franchise with 10 locations nationwide, seven in Florida. Sarasota's Laser Lounge will be the only one with a short-term vacation rental attached–an impressive space where the previous owners used to live. The $3.35 million purchase of the building, which is just across the street from Selby Public Library, closed on Aug. 27. It was on the market for a little more than two months and was listed for $3.7 million.

The med spa delivers injectables, fillers, facials and, of course, laser treatments for skin and hair removal. Because it’s “the largest company in Florida that specializes in it,” owner Jonathan Sigg says pricing will be “very reasonable” due to its volume. “Many businesses are adding injectables on as a service because it only takes a weekend course to get Botox-certified. That’s why you’ll see it offered at the dentist’s office. But this is all we do,” he says.

He and wife April own and operate the spas together, and opened their first one 13 years ago in Estero. The new Sarasota location is slated to open in early November.

At the new location, they plan to operate The Laser Lounge Spa on the second floor, and use the third and fourth floors, connected by a spiral staircase, as a short-term vacation rental. At almost 4,000 square feet, the combined two floors have four bedrooms and can sleep eight to 10 people. “It’s perfect for a wedding party that wants to hit the spa and make it a weekend getaway,” Sigg says. There’s also a rooftop patio with panoramic views of Sarasota Bay. The ground floor will have a 16-chair hair and nail salon.

The Siggs are happy to be back in town. They once had a Laser Lounge location at 5802 Bee Ridge Road. 

“We were in Sarasota roughly five years ago but we ended up selling our share to our partners. But because of the strong economy, we decided to jump back in,” Sigg says.

Built in 2000 by local architect Max Lassiter, the Second Street building is at once simple and a standout. Two rectangluar boxes stand high, one a few steps behind the other. The large, centrally placed circle-shaped window gives it distinction, and the front door is framed by a single parenthesis overtop, giving the entrance a touch of whimsy. In total, the building has more than 15,000 square feet and includes an elevator and a kitchen with a 14-foot island.

Architecture lovers can rejoice. Even though the location is zoned for a 10-story building, like the new luxury condo The Collection currently under construction next door, the new owners plan to leave its skeleton as is, sticking with a cosmetic remodel that won’t erase the building's charm.
