The City of Sarasota and the nonprofit Brotherhood of Men Mentor Group Inc. are celebrating the rehabilitation of a Newtown home, the first in a series of planned upgrades to homes in the neighborhood. As part of a pilot program, the city granted Brotherhood of Men four vacant city-owned residential properties to be rehabilitated and resold or rented. The Brotherhood has cleared debris from the remaining three properties and will begin work on those projects over the next several months. A dedication and ribbon-cutting for the first home, located at 2952 Links Ave., Sarasota, will be held 10 a.m.-noon Saturday, Jan. 13. Brotherhood of Men educates and trains at-risk youth from ages 8 to 25 to help them develop skills needed to enter the workforce.
