Nonprofits in Bloom 2026: Teen Court of Sarasota, Inc.

Justice for Youth by Youth

Teen Court of Sarasota, Inc. in collaboration with Sarasota Magazine Content Studio September 1, 2026

Kids make mistakes. Adults do, too. The difference is that adults usually have decades to outgrow theirs. Teenagers are often judged while they’re still becoming who they’ll eventually be. That’s why Teen Court exists. Instead of branding a first-time, nonviolent offender with a mistake that can follow them for years, Teen Court offers something far more powerful: accountability with a second chance. Young people stand before a jury of their peers, accept responsibility for their actions, complete meaningful sanctions like community service, counseling, restitution, or letters of apology, and earn the opportunity to move forward with a clean slate if they successfully complete the program. Just as importantly, local student volunteers serve as attorneys, jurors, clerks, and bailiffs, learning leadership, empathy, and civic responsibility along the way. Justice doesn’t always have to end with punishment. Sometimes it begins with the simple belief that one bad decision shouldn’t define an entire life. Teen Court has been quietly proving that for 28 years.

About Us:

  • Student volunteers gain leadership, public speaking, critical thinking and civic engagement skills.
  • The program reduces repeat offenses while helping first-time offenders avoid deeper involvement in the justice system.
  • Teen Court believes young people are more than their worst mistake and deserve the opportunity to succeed.
