Sumeet Bhanot, MD, FACS

Born into a military family while his father was on the battlefield in India, Dr. Bhanot immigrated to the U.S. at the age of eight when his father developed a severe medical condition. His subsequent exposure to the medical field inspired a career where dedication and perseverance earned scholarships to prestigious schools, such as NYU and Yale University. Fostering the mettle that has shaped him into the surgeon he is today, Dr. Bhanot’s passion is surgery for the aging face (facelift, necklift, eyelid lift, browlift), and cosmetic rhinoplasty, yet he is most renowned for his signature rare extended deep plane facelift.

Dr. Bhanot describes the face as soft tissue consisting of skin, fascia and deep fat, anchored to the bone by penetrating ligaments to the surface. Aging is the sliding of the soft tissue deep volume through the ligaments, stacking over the laugh lines and into the neck (jowls), leaving a hollowed out lower eyelid. Dr. Bhanot feels there are two key truths. First, the cohesion of the outer three layers creates natural animation, any compromise of this relationship will result in an unnatural look. Second, since the ligaments that support the face also limit the upward movement, it is not only the vertical pull of the facelift that counts but the extent of the ligament release. In the “traditional SMAS facelift”, the fascia is pulled against tethered ligaments. The heavy midface is not lifted and the gaunt upper cheek and eyelid remain. Some augment with fat to fill the hollow, but this just adds a second cheek on top of the original cheek (Cherub-like look). Alternatively, some over compensate by pulling the skin taut creating a windblown look that pulls the corners of the mouth. Both options distort and look artificial.

Dr. Bhanot’s artistic vision, experience, and comprehensive understanding of facial anatomy allow him to safely navigate the complete release of these deep ligamentous structures in an Extended Deep Plane Facelift and shift all three layers in unison, restoring natural proportion. Performing deep plane facelifts exclusively over the past 13 years, Dr. Bhanot finds that over 70% of the deep plane facelifts he does are to revise distortion from prior facelifts, threads or indiscriminate use of injectable fillers and fat. Not all deep plane facelifts are created equally; results speak for themselves.
