Starting in the early 1990s, Susan Terry was a visionary leader in the fight against HIV and AIDS in the Sarasota community. At a time when stigma and fear surrounded the epidemic, she boldly stepped forward to establish the Community AIDS Network (CAN), one of the first comprehensive care clinics dedicated to treating HIV/AIDS patients.
Now known as CAN Community Health, her bold vision and efforts have grown to provide comprehensive care to more than 33,500 people annually. Founded in Sarasota, the network of clinics has expanded across Florida and into communities in Arizona, Nevada, South Carolina, Texas, and Virginia.
The Susan Terry Foundation was created by CAN Community Health to unite individuals, corporations, and foundations in building a future where people living with HIV are celebrated for their resilience, embraced without prejudice, and empowered to achieve their dreams.
The foundation has been established to support organizations that empower people affected by HIV to live full lives, free of stigma. Its approach focuses on three main pillars:
- Encouraging community collaboration
- Addressing critical factors affecting health
- Supporting education and awareness
