All Faiths Food Bank, the only food bank and largest hunger relief organization in Sarasota and DeSoto counties, provides over 20 million meals each year through programs and partnerships with hundreds of charitable organizations throughout the community. Federal budget cuts to critical programs mean more people than ever need assistance. The result is that community members are forced to make impossible choices: rent or car repairs? Utility bills or prescriptions? Medical care or food?
According to a recent report, an estimated 43% of households in Sarasota are below the minimum income level required to afford basic necessities. Among these neighbors are hardworking members of and vital contributors to the community – health aides, teachers, security guards and delivery drivers – as well as children, older adults and veterans. All Faiths also operates programs that help families and individuals to gain long-term food security, enjoy better health outcomes and achieve self-sufficiency.
- The Autumn Harvest campaign which runs through Sept. 30 raises funds to provide fresh fruits and vegetables to neighbors experiencing hunger.
- In addition to providing food, All Faiths helps families achieve self-sufficiency through services such as SNAP benefits, Medicaid and tax filing assistance, and referrals to other providers.
- Consider attending their signature special events: the Autumn Harvest Dinner (Oct. 24) and Bowls of Hope (Nov. 9).
- September is Hunger Action Month: take a stand against hunger by volunteering, peer-to-peer fundraising and donating.
