Cybersecurity isn’t just a tech issue—it’s a human one. That’s why faculty at the University of South Florida Sarasota-Manatee are leading groundbreaking, people-centered research that aligns with the vision of the new Bellini College of Artificial Intelligence, Cybersecurity and Computing. The first college of its kind in Florida, and one of only a few nationwide, it brings together AI, cybersecurity and computing under one interdisciplinary umbrella. Together, these efforts reflect USF’s commitment to making Florida a global leader in ethical, innovative tech that serves people first. 

At USF Sarasota-Manatee, criminologist Roberta O’Malley is advancing research into sextortion, a form of online blackmail where private images are used to coerce victims. Her findings have shed light on the emotional toll and unique vulnerabilities of male victims, offering guidance for law enforcement and prevention strategies. She also co-directs the campus’s CyberSota Research Lab, where students help tackle evolving digital threats. 

Fawn Ngo’s research is bridging the digital divide. She found that many people unknowingly engage in unsafe online practices and often don’t report victimization. In response, she’s developing a multilingual cybersecurity resource hub to empower users and reduce vulnerability. Ngo’s work exemplifies how proactive research at USF Sarasota-Manatee is shaping safer, smarter communities for all.
