It has been almost four decades since Janet Mattson and her husband Curt left their careers to head to Florida for sunnier weather and a desire to open a decorating store selling wallcoverings, window treatments and fabric draperies. With a masters in biology and a background in science education, Janet had a lot to learn. 

In the early days, she and Curt ran lean—managing every aspect of the business themselves. Within a few short years, Janet grew the staff to over 30. She recalls fielding calls asking for “the owner,” and replying, “I am the owner,”—a sign of how far women in business have come.

Understanding that Florida homes presented different needs than up north, Janet focused on educating customers about light, heat, and privacy solutions. Guided by the principle “treat your customers like family,” M&M has earned years of Best Of Sarasota awards and became the second Hunter Douglas Gallery in the country—a designation that reflects excellence in both product and service.
