Nonprofits in Bloom: All Faiths Food Bank

Hunger is Close – Perhaps Even Next Door

By Sarasota Magazine Content Studio August 26, 2024

Sometimes, hunger is just a house over. Sadly, many of our neighbors can’t afford even the basic necessities each month. That’s the reality right now – and it may be closer than you think.

According to a recent report, nearly one-third of working families in Sarasota are living paycheck-to-paycheck. Among these neighbors are hardworking members of and vital contributors to the community – nurses, teachers, security guards and truck drivers – as well as children, older adults and veterans.

Soaring costs for housing and childcare have contributed to the hunger crisis. Community members are being forced to make impossible choices: rent or car repairs? Utility bills or prescriptions? Medical care or food?

All Faiths Food Bank is the only food bank and largest hunger relief organization in Sarasota and DeSoto counties, providing millions of meals each year through programs and partnerships with hundreds of charitable organizations throughout the community. AFFB also operates programs that help families and individuals to gain long-term food security, enjoy better health outcomes and achieve self-sufficiency.

Please give. The need is right next door.

  • The Autumn Harvest campaign, happening now through Sept. 30 – raises funds to provide fresh fruits and vegetables to neighbors experiencing hunger.

  • In addition to providing food, All Faiths helps families achieve self-sufficiency through services, such as SNAP benefits and tax assistance, financial literacy, and referrals to other providers.

  • Consider joining us at our special events this year: the Autumn Harvest dinner (Oct. 5); our biggest community event, Bowls of Hope (Nov. 10); and Friends FULL of Giving (Nov. 15).

  • September is Hunger Action Month. We invite you to take a stand against hunger by volunteering, fundraising and donating to help our neighbors!
