Friday, June 5, 7-10 p.m., N. Palm Ave., Sarasota

Fresh Fridays closes out its season by turning North Palm Avenue into an outdoor dance party, with music from DJ D2, dance instructors leading the crowd through different styles and local vendors, light bites, refreshments, games, activities and giveaways at the welcome table. 🧗 Hexrock Climbing Grand Opening

Saturday, June 6, 2-10 p.m., Hexrock Climbing, 1355 Sarasota Center Blvd., Sarasota

Sarasota’s new climbing gym opens with an all-day grand opening, with festivities from 2-5 p.m. and day passes available for anyone curious enough to test the walls. Creative Liberties marks the coming centennial of Marilyn Monroe’s birth with a three-day pop-up exhibition inspired by the Hollywood icon’s life, image and cultural afterlife. The show includes work by artists interpreting Monroe through glamour, nostalgia, surrealism and reinvention, with an opening reception from 5-7 p.m. Thursday, June 4, with food, live music and guests invited to dress in Marilyn-inspired style. Squeaky Wheel Fringe Festival presents  a new comedy by former Chicago Tribune journalist Kelly Haramis and her daughter, Kallista Schneiderman. The plot begins with an old wound: Haramis didn’t get cast as Rizzo in her Florida high school’s 1989 production of Grease. Decades later, her daughter tries to fix it by staging a fake senior-center production so her mother can finally have the role. Part family prank, part theater-kid revenge fantasy, the show looks at disappointment, devotion, aging and the absurd things we do for love. Tickets are $12.30. Kids can build oyster habitats, look at plankton under a microscope and pilot an underwater robot, which is a stronger Saturday plan than asking the ocean to entertain them from a beach towel. Wellen Park celebrates National Trails Day with the grand opening of three new nature trails: Oakheart, Buttonwood and The Greenway, which together span more than 6 miles. The morning includes a native plant walk from 9-10:15 a.m., a local wildlife walk from 10:15-11:30 a.m. and a guided bike ride from 11:30 a.m.-noon. Guests can also explore Wellen Park’s larger trail network on their own, and registered attendees will be entered to win a beach cruiser bicycle. Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe’s Independent Artist Showcase brings soprano JoAnna Ford back to the stage after a seven-year hiatus following a sarcoidosis diagnosis that threatened her ability to sing. In Heart Wide Open, Ford uses jazz, soul and storytelling to trace illness, grief, Black womanhood, faith, artistry and the long road back to performance.
