Sarasota Jewish Theatre has announced the schedule for its 2024-2025 season, which will feature three plays and a documentary screening between January through May, all presented at The Players Centre Studio 1130 at the Crossings at Siesta Key mall.
Here's a look what's on the docket.
Being Somebody: Growing up Brooklyn, a Father/Daughter Tale
Oct. 19, 2024, at 7:30 p.m.; Oct. 20, 2024, at 1:30 p.m.
This play is a funny, hope-filled show starring Dr. Howard Mase, an 88-year-old psychologist, and his singer/playwright/actor daughter Marla Mase. Through storytelling, song and dance, they take us back in time to Howard's childhood in post-war 1940s Brooklyn and Marla's navigation of the gritty disco era of the 1970s. Call it a "musical memoir."
Visiting Mr. Green
Jan. 29-Feb. 9, 2025
This show, by Jeff Baron, is a post-pandemic rewrite of the beloved play in which elderly Mr. Green is almost hit by a car driven by 29-year-old Ross Gardiner. Gardiner is sentenced to community service and must help the lonely widower once a week for six months. Directed by Gus Kaikkonen, this 21st-century “odd couple” take audiences on a journey of humor, heartbreak and healing. A preview takes place Jan. 29 at 7:30, with performances running Jan. 30-February 9.
Screening: The Catskills: The Rise and Fall of the Borscht Belt
Feb. 3 at 7 p.m.
The Catskills: The Rise and Fall of the Borscht Belt, winner of the 2024 Miami Jewish Film Festival, is a funny, nostalgic tribute to New York's Catskills and the “Borscht Belt”—from its beginning as a refuge for working-class Jews to its evolution into a lavish summer playground for the affluent to its eventual decline. The film chronicles the cultural, historical, and economic influences that created the borscht belt, provided a training ground for the great comedians of the 20th century, and became the inspiration for iconic films like Dirty Dancing. A discussion follows the screening.
Lost in Yonkers
March 19-30, 2025
Winner of the 1991 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, Neil Simon's Lost in Yonkers tells a moving story about the experiences that scar a family and the healing that love can provide. Directed by SJT artistic director Carole Kleinberg, is also a testament to Simon's talent as a playwright. A preview is March 19, 2025, at 7:30 p.m., with performances from March 20-March 30, 2025.
Bad Jews
April 30-May 11, 2025
Joshua Harmon’s Bad Jews will also be directed by Gus Kaikkonen. After their beloved grandfather dies, leaving a treasured piece of religious jewelry, his grandchildren fight over the heirloom. In one corner is Daphna, who is volatile, self-assured and unbending. In the other is her equally stubborn cousin, the secular Liam, who wants it for his shiksa girlfriend. Stuck in the middle is Liam's brother, the gentle Josh, who tries to stay out of the fray. Along the way they battle about their religious faith, cultural assimilation, and the validity of their Jewish identity. A preview is April 30, 2025, at 7:30 p.m., with performances from May 1-May 11, 2025.
