Manatee Performing Arts Center: Pippin
Aug. 12-22
This Stephen Schwartz musical about the great emperor Charlemagne’s restless young son kicks off this week at MPAC, in the circus-inspired, updated version that won Tony Awards back in 2013. There’s “Magic to Do” for the cast, and hopefully magic moments for the audience. Get your tickets by calling (941) 748-5875 or go to manateeperformingartscenter.com.
WSLR/Fogartyville
Aug. 12 and 14
Plenty of jazz on tap at the Fogartyville Community Media and Arts Center on Kumquat Court, led off by the Duane Eubanks Jazz Quintet, at 8 p.m. Thursday. That’s followed by a performance by the Aaron Johnson Jazz Quartet, 8 p.m. Saturday. Find out more and buy in at wslr.org/events/ or call (941) 954-8636 for more info.
Summer Circus Spectacular
Through Aug. 14
Last chance this weekend to enjoy the family-friendly circus presented by Circus Arts Conservatory in the Historic Asolo Theater on the Ringling grounds. Comedy, juggling, acrobatics and more fill the show; for tickets call (941) 360-7399 or visit ringling.org.
My Lord, What a Night
Through Aug. 15
It’s also the last chance to see this Florida Studio Theatre production, based on a true story that revolves around a meeting between scientist Albert Einstein and singer Marian Anderson in the 1930s. Onstage in the Keating Theatre; call (941) 366-9000 or visit floridastudiotheatre.org. And read our review of the show here.
Exhibitions at The Ringling
Through Aug. 15
Two more “last chance” opportunities here, to view Sam Gilliam: Selections (works gleaned from local Gilliam collectors) and Saito Kiyoshi: Graphic Awakening. Check out both at ringling.org.
