If you’ve driven past the Greater Sarasota Chamber of Commerce building on Fruitville Road lately, chances are your eye has been caught by the latest in the series of murals that are taking over the town through the Paint SRQ with Love program. Artist Matt Myers has been at work turning the west-facing wall into a celebration of the centennial of the Chamber, depicting figures crucial to our history (like Charles and John Ringling, Bertha Palmer, A.B. Edwards, Lewis Colson, Owen Burns, Rose Wilson, John Hamilton Gillespie and Emma E. Booker.)

According to Myers, all were chosen not only for their historical significance, but because their contributions continue to influence the development of Sarasota today. The mural comes about through a partnership that also includes the Arts and Cultural Alliance of Sarasota County, the Chamber, Speed ProImaging, United Rentals, PPG Paints, Story Vox Video, the City of Sarasota—and Sarasota Magazine itself, as publisher Kelley Lavin and creative director Gigi Ortwein both played significant roles in the mural’s creation through their work on planning and artist selection committees.

Myers is at work on the east-facing wall of the building next, with completion coming up in the next couple of weeks or so. Take a look when you’re next downtown.
