WBTT Makes Change to 2020-21 Season Schedule

The season opener is now slated to be a production of The Soul Crooners.

Seen performing as the Soul Crooners during WBTT's 2019 event at Ed Smith Stadium are Charles Manning, Michael Mendez, Sheldon Rhoden, Nate Jacobs and Leon St. Pitts II.

Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe has announced a change in its 2020-21 season lineup—perhaps  just one example of how arts organizations will need to continue to adapt and be flexible in light of COVID-19 restrictions during the coming months.

WBTT was originally set to open with the show Broadway in Black in October, but that production has been changed to a reprise of its popular musical revue, The Soul Crooners, which showcases R&B classics from the 1960s and ’70s. The Soul Crooners was most recently seen during WBTT’s 2019 “Arts in the Ballpark” event at Ed Smith Stadium. With a smaller cast and featuring local talent, the show eliminates the need for actors to travel.

The show will now occupy the season opening Oct. 7-Nov. 22 slot. The season is also set to include the offerings Black Nativity, Ruby, Pipeline and Smokey Joe’s Café.

More changes are possible as the theater monitors public health recommendations, but for now current subscribers will get a priority notice by email when subscriptions to the 2020-21 season are available. They will be able to purchase subscriptions or single tickets online and choose their own seats based on their comfort level with social distancing measures. New subscribers and single ticket buyers will be notified via WBTT’s patron email list and media announcements when tickets become available to the general public.
