Gloria Musicae Takes Audiences On "Musical Journeys" With Coming Season
Gloria Musicae, which prides itself on being Sarasota’s only professional vocal ensemble, is going international with its 2016-17 line-up of performances, choosing works from several countries and cultures for its six-concert “Musical Journeys” schedule.
Under the artistic direction of Joseph Holt, the ensemble launches its 38th season with a “Viva Espana!” concert showcasing music of Spain and the New World, accompanied by guitar, piano and dancer (Nov. 6, Siesta Key Chapel). That’s followed by “Too Hot to Handel”—think Handel’s beloved Messiah delivered gospel-style, thanks to members of Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe and the Sarasota Orchestra (Dec. 11, Sarasota Opera House).
GM heads to Hungary next, with “Brahms’ Lullaby and Beyond,” featuring the composer’s Gypsy Songs set for chamber choir and his Love Songs as well (Jan. 22, Faith Lutheran Church). Then it’s Bonjour, France, with “Faithfully French Choral Classics,” featuring Poulenc’s Gloria and Durufle’s Requiem, with guest organist Stephen Hamilton and baritone David Davani (March 5, First Church).
Another requiem, this time Verdi’s masterpiece, will be presented in collaboration with the Master Chorale of Tampa Bay, the Sarasota Orchestra, and four soloists (April 23, Sarasota Opera House). Finally, the choral group polishes off its season with its annual July 4 concert (at First Church), featuring settings of famous texts in American history with “Voices of Freedom.”
Tickets range from $20 to $60 and will be available in September for the season; for more information, visit gloriamusicae.org.
