Harvey Milk Festival to Celebrate 11th Anniversary
The Harvey Milk Festival has announced the dates for its 11th annual celebration, to be held May 7-9, 2020. This year's slate of events include a pre-festival concert series on May 1; an art exhibit paying homage to queer history; a performance by the James Graham Dance Theatre; and a music festival featuring 10 bands, a vigil and a keynote speaker that founder Shannon Fortner has said is meant to "awaken people’s inner activist." The festival honors Harvey Milk, one of the first openly gay men to be elected to public office in California and who was killed by a disgruntled city official in 1978. It aims to foster the arts as a catalyst for social and political change.
