Reporters, photographers, copy editors and other employees at the Sarasota Herald-Tribune recently signed cards indicating their desire to form a union and be represented by The Newspaper Guild - Communications Workers of America. The cards, filed Wednesday with the National Labor Relations Board, will lead to an election by Herald-Tribune staff members in the next 20-40 days. "If a majority of those voting support the Guild, the Sarasota newsroom will join the Lakeland Ledger as the only unionized newspaper newsrooms in Florida and the first to unionize in the Sunshine State in modern memory," according to a press release from the Guild. The Herald-Tribune is owned by New York's GateHouse Media.
