The Sarasota City Commission voted Monday evening to approve preliminary plans for a 521-space St. Armands Circle parking garage that would sit to the north of the circle itself, behind the strip that contains Shore, Cafe L'Europe and Columbia. The garage would include public bathrooms, a police substation and valet parking and would add a total of 334 additional spaces to parking near the circle. The project is estimated to cost $14.9 million in total, which includes costs for burying overhead power lines. Paid parking rates that range from 50 cents to $2 around St. Armands Circle and in surrounding lots would fund some of the project. If construction moves ahead as projected, the structure would be completed in December 2018.
